Last season’s champions started the game strongly and took the lead early on from a corner. It was 2-0 before long when a 20-yard free kick was dispatched well.

South continued to create chances and finally got back into the game just a minute into the second half, through Ben Peppi.

However, Trafford showed their quality by scoring two more goals, allowing them to coast home to victory. But South had other ideas and pulled two goals back through Jack Wooley and Saul Shapiro to create an interesting final 12 minutes, but Trafford held on to take the points.

South manager Neil Collins said: “We lost 4-1 to the same Trafford Mersey side in the cup just before Christmas, so we’re getting there.

“We’ll be fighting on three fronts over the next couple of weeks – in the league, the league cup and the Morrison – so we look forward to giving a good account of ourselves and hopefully having a cup run.

“A big well done to Ben Peppi too – so often branded a fair weather player, but he proved a lot of people wrong this week, although his knees were still clean as a whistle at full-time!”
