Joshua Newman made a triumphant return to competition with victory at the National spring event.

The teenager from Essex marked his comeback from a back injury with an outstanding performance in the first of two events geared towards qualification for the British Championships.

Newman has worked tirelessly building himself up in the gym to aid a full recovery, and his efforts were rewarded as he cruised through qualification with a gold-medal performance.

"I'm feeling very positive and confident," said Newman. "I’m very pleased with my overall display and to make qualification at the first event takes all the pressure off me.

"It's my GCSE exam period which is coming up so that's where the pressure is!"
