Mattey progress a fairytale story, says Landesberg

Andy Landesberg believes Jack Mattey is destined for big things after the teenager became the youngest player to represent London Lions’ first team against Letchworth Garden City.

Aged 16 and 14 days, Mattey came on as a second-half substitute and put in an impressive performance in the Herts Senior County League Premier Division encounter that ended 2-2.

He is a graduate of the club’s under-16 team and the son of former Lions star Alan Mattey, who died following an illness nine years ago.

Landesberg said: “Jack was invited to train with the first team a few weeks ago and he has not looked back.

"He’s looked bright and sharp and coach Darren Yarlett has only had good things to say.

"I always say if you are good enough then you are old enough. Jack attacked well, defended well and his pass completion was excellent.

"This shows the hard work that is currently going on with the youngsters at the club. We also had Josh Tray and Louie Greenham, both 18, starting today."

Mattey admits he will not forget the past few days in a hurry following the opening of the Alan Mattey Stand at Rowley Lane.
He said: "It's an amazing feeling to play for the first team. I’m honoured to make my debut at such a young age.

"It’s been an unforgettable experience. I’m just gutted that we couldn’t get the win.
