Hapoel Beer Sheva to play Southampton in Europa League

articlemain

Hapoel Beer Sheva will face British opposition in Europe for the second time this season after being paired in the same group as Southampton.

Edged out 5-4 on aggregate by Celtic in the Champions League playoff round, Hapoel will also take on Inter Milan and Sparta Prague in Group K.

Maccabi Tel-Aviv joined Hapoel in the group stages on Thursday night after eliminating Hadjuk Split on penalties.

The Israelis held a 2-1 advantage from the home leg, but they soon found themselves behind when Marko Ćosić found the net for Split.

Ezequiel Scarione hauled Maccabi level seven minutes into the second half, giving Maccabi a crucial away goal.

Ćosić took the tie to extra-time with his second of the night, and with no further goals the tie went to penalties.

And it was left to Avraham Rikan to keep his cool and send Maccabi through on a memorable night.

Beitar Jerusalem were eliminated by St Etienne. Trailing 2-1 from the home leg, the return match in France ended goalless.
