HERTS SENIOR COUNTY CUP
MACCABI LONDON LIONS 6 WESTON FC 3
A fabulous five-goal salvo from James Gershfield guided Maccabi London Lions into the next round of the Herts Senior County Cup following a nine-goal thriller against Weston FC.
Both teams went into the tie with limited knowledge about their opponents in a game where the Lions started slowly. It took them 15 minutes to get going and once they clicked into gear, they pulled Weston apart creating a number of gaps within their backline. The deadlock was broken after 20 minutes with a wonderful ball floated by David Cohen on to Gershfield who volleyed home.
Lions were in control before Weston's No. 10 took the game by the scruff of the neck with a 20-minute hat-trick leaving Lions' joint-manager Joe Marsh "at boiling point".
After a heated team-talk at half-time the Lions "responded unbelievably, we gritted our teeth produced 45 minutes of football which was truly class".
With five minutes of the second half gone Gershfield latched onto a through ball to coolly slot home and bring the score back to 3-2 and two minutes after the restart Gershfield found himself in the same position and he delivered the killer blow once again bring Lions level at 3-3 - the momentum was suddenly back with Lions with another two quick goals from Gershfield.
Weston's heads dropped thereafter and the game was over the game was finally over when Dom Cheniart headed home after a great silky passage of play giving final score of 6-3.
Gershfield was man-of-the-match for his five goals, but a special mention for David Cohen, Richard Gold and Joey Lazare who all produced top performances on Sunday.
