UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
MACCABI TEL AVIV 0 CHELSEA 4
Maccabi Tel Aviv bowed out of European competition on Tuesday night as they were beaten 4-0 by Chelsea for the second time this season.
The Israeli champions restricted the Blues to one goal in the first half but they were left with an uphill struggle after experienced defender Tal Ben Haim was dismissed for kicking out at Diego Costa.
Gary Cahill has fired the visitors deservedly in front after Maccabi goalkeeper Rajkovic had tipped his initial header on to the post, before a moment of madness from Ben Haim.
If anything, Maccabi improved in the second half, forcing Asmir Begovic into two excellent saves, but Chelsea's superior technique, pace and power paid dividends in the second half.
Willian curled home a delicious free-kick on 73 minutes, finally beating the inspired Rajkovic, before headers from Oscar (77) and Kurt Zouma in stoppage time completed the rout.
The defeat means Maccabi can no longer qualify for the Europa League as third-place finishers. They conclude their Champions League campaign against Dynamo Kiev on December 9, still without a goal in open play.
