Bernstein: We can win Euros

articlemain

FA chairman David Bernstein believes England are capable of winning next year's European Championship finals.

Fabio Capello's men require a point from tonight's match in Montenegro to book their place at the finals in Poland and Ukraine next summer.

Bernstein said: "There is a huge desire at the FA for the England football team to succeed.

"I'm encouraged by some of the young players coming through and I am very much looking forward to the finals. We are capable of winning it."

Bernstein took over as FA chairman shortly after the failed 2018 World Cup bid. The former Manchester City chairman is determined to help the organisation improve its image.

"Generally speaking, the FA is a fantastic organisation," he said. "They do a huge amount of good work that isn't always recognised.

"We need to address some of the structural issues but will continue to move the game forward."

Asked if football's bubble will ever burst, he replied: "The beautiful game is still largely beautiful. Football has a tremendous pull worldwide and is in a fantastic position to bring people and nations together.

"FIFA manages to hold together more than 200 countries and the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Bernstein was speaking at the London Maccabi Recreational Trust's annual lunch in central London. He said that he plans to visit the organisation's base at Rowley Lane "very soon".
