There were mixed emotions for Israeli clubs in the second qualifying round of Europa League qualifying matches as Beitar Jerusalem and Maccabi Tel Aviv progressed, but Maccabi Haifa tumbled out.
A first-half double from Omer Atzily sent Beitar through, in a game they went on to lose 3-2 against Omonia.
1-0winners from the first leg in Israel, midfielder Atzily registered in the 17th and 45th minutes to take Beitar in level at the interval at 2-2. Omonia set up a grandstand finish with a third goal on 81 minutes but Beitar held on to progress.
A late strike from Israeli international Gal Alberman ensured Maccabi Tel Aviv went through at the expense of Kairat.
Having drawn the away leg 1-1, Maccabi forged ahead early on through Tal Ben Chaim in Netanya. Kairat levelled just after the hour, but Alberman eased any nerves by firing home nine minutes from time.
Former Israel champions Maccabi Haifa crashed out following a penalty shoot-out defeat against Kalju in Tallinn.
The tie finished deadlocked after a 1-1 draw in the second leg after a 34th minute penalty from Nikita Rukavytsya was cancelled out by a stoppage-time effort from Tarmo Neemelo.
And it was Kalju who progressed after holding their nerve to win 5-3., with Haifa substitute Amit Zenati crucially missing with the visitors’ third attempt.
