Evelyn (Emily Blunt) braves the unknown in "A Quiet Place Part II.”

John Krasinski returns with a follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2018 film A Quiet Place, a compelling sci-fi horror which followed a family attempting to survive in a post apocalyptic world in which silence has become humanity’s only chance of survival against deadly monsters. The tension levels are once again sky high.

Written by Krasinski, A Quiet Place Part II stars Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns) and Peaky Blinders alum Cillian Murphy.

After the death of her husband, Evelyn Abbott (Blunt) is forced to flee her home with her her surviving children Regan (played brilliantly by deaf actor Millicent Simmonds) and Marcus (Noah Jupe) and her newborn baby. As they venture out into the unknown, the Abbots come face to face with hostile survivor Emmet (Murphy).

At first reluctant to help, a taciturn Emmet eventually agrees to let them stay. Meanwhile, armed with a new weapon against the creatures, Regan leaves her family behind in the hope of finding assistance.

The film opens on a superbly devised action-packed flashback sequence that goes a long way into answering some of the questions surrounding the origin of the creatures.

Krasinski presents a fast-paced, brilliantly acted and undeniably engaging sequel which is only slightly let down by a rather baggy screenplay.

Still all the elements that made the first film a must watch are presents here even if the story feels a little less focused than the original. A genuinely thrilling return to the big screen for one of the best franchises around.

In cinemas from Friday
