Will the best dancer win Strictly - or the underdog who blags the sympathy vote?

November 03, 2009 17:54

What a difficult decision this week, where reward for effort won out
over reward for actual dancing talent.

This week the audience vote shamefully over-rode the plaudits that were due for two women who have taken instruction well and produced fantastic results. Neither Ali nor Zoe should have found themselves in the dance-off, and it was very sad for the one who had to leave.

Meanwhile Craig, who is trying really hard but will never have what it takes to win the contest, tearfully appealed to the audience to let him get to Blackpool (where the show is recording next week) just because it’s his home town - and they went for it.

Last weekend’s vote caused a lot of controversy among dance professionals who believe that talent should be rewarded first and foremost, even over effort by the more stumbling celebrities. Is it really going to be the best dancers who win Strictly this year?

Zoe and James
Zoe tried hard but her rhythm was off; I don’t understand why the celebrities find the Samba so difficult. However, I’m still sorry to see Zoe go after she has come along so well.

Ali and Brian
Very stylish and classy in terms of the dancing technique but not an exciting performance at all. However, I do think it’s right Ali was saved on the night.

Craig and Flavia
It is great to see Craig really trying hard, even though I think he should have been above appealing for the sympathy vote.  These two gave a gracious and confident performance this week.

Chris and Ola
This was a good performance but nothing special.  I wish they wouldn’t put Ola in such unattractive outfits.

Jade and Ian
A very smooth and elegant performance -  I agree with Craig and Len.  It was a treat to watch.  The Foxtrot is very difficult to master and they really made it look easy.

Natalie and Vincent
Well done Natalie – the Jive is a very difficult dance and she kept the energy and really mastered the steps.

Ricky and Erin
That was a very good performance and Len was right.  Ricky more than any of the guys really tries hard and I think the comments from Craig and Bruno were unnecessarily unkind.

Laila and Anton
That was a very classy performance.  I love the Viennese Waltz and the costume was gorgeous.

Phil and Katya
That was a terrific Tango with lots of drama, intricate steps and attitude.  I think Phil is making great progress.

Ricky and Natalie
Amazing – the best dance of the night.  Beautiful lines and a great routine.  This guy is a dancer and he moves gracefully creating a great lead.
