You cannot be a Jew unless you fully support Israel.
Those Jews who join forces with the anti-Israel de-legitimisers in criticising everything about Israel show a form of self-hatred and insecurity often encountered among long persecuted minorities throughout history. It is a misguided attempt to be “accepted” amongst what they see as their “peers”.
The way the anti-Zionist Jew behaves clearly shows that they reject themselves as Jews and is an unconscious acceptance to the image which their enemies seek to project of them.
Psychologically this behaviour is understandable, but is a form of political defeatism. If all oppressed peoples reacted in the same perverse manner, seeking to identify themselves with a supposedly inflexible oppressor, national emancipation, self-determination and national identity would be impossible and would not exist anywhere.
The anti-Zionist “Jews” fail to understand that national liberation implies legitimate self-defence and the defence of Judaism. Life in the Diaspora has brought about a state of affairs in which many marginal “Jews” are interested in neither the one nor the other, Israel or being Jewish. Some lose their sense of identity and any residual loyalty they might owe to other Jews and proclaim a shocking solidarity with those who seek to bring death to their brethren, joining in demonstrations against Israel, speaking out in public meetings against Israel, writing in newspapers and blogging against Israel on the internet.
Usually, it is down to historical ignorance and over-simplification of the issues that characterises many of the extreme anti-Zionists. Often the ideology is “picked up” whilst at University as it is seen to be “trendy” and “lefty” and many go through this “lefty” stage whilst at University. Usually the majority of people who go to University grow up and grow out of extremist ideology when they leave and enter the real world. However, there are some who don’t. These are the vociferous minority of todays self-hating anti-Zionist “Jews”, we all know who they are, they do not grow up or grow out of their extremist ideology they carry their “student behaviour” through into adult-hood. The majority of the anti-Zionist, self hating Jewish de-legitmisers writing, blogging and consorting with our enemies today are the same people I was up against in my student leadership days at UJS in the 1970’s, still reading the Guardian and wearing their open toed sandals.
I think it is sad and pathetic that Jews who have transferred their allegiance to the other camp believe that in attacking Israel and seeking to de-legitimise everything Israel stands for, in their own views, are combating anti-Semitism – much in the same way as if it were possible to advance the cause of freedom by choosing to remain un-free. Persecuted themselves, the would-be persecutors of others, they find their enemies, not in their self-styled well-wishers, but in those they are willing to betray.
It is pathetic that Israel, continually criticized by these people, should in the long run be their only shield and refuge and, paradoxically, the only real guarantee of their right to speak out, even though what they say runs counter to their own interests.
Finally, it is pathetic, whether they like it or not, from the high profile Gerald Kaufman to the many bloggers, posters and readers of this web-site, who know who they are, and whether I like it or not, they remain my brethren and we are all Jews, these people need to wake up and grow up.
