The 'real' Ahmadinejad: if only

August 06, 2010 16:07

So George Galloway wants to show the “real” Mahmoud Ahmadinejad .

Interesting choice. Let’s look at some of what the Iranian leader holds to be true. We can start with his denial of the Holocaust:

“They have created a myth today that they call the massacre of Jews and they consider it a principle above God, religions and the prophets.”

Or his friendly stance on Israel.

"Israel must be wiped off the map,” he said shortly after being elected.

“Whoever accepts the legitimacy of this regime has in fact, signed the defeat of the Islamic world.

“I have no doubt that the new wave that has started in Palestine, and we witness it in the Islamic world too, will eliminate this disgraceful stain from the Islamic world.”

Lovely.

Then, in the aftermath of the Green revolution of June 2009, there’s his baffling understanding of democracy and what winning the popular vote actually means:

“Our nation has gone through a glorious and fully democratic election, opening a new chapter for our country in the march towards national progress and enhanced international interactions."

So that's why so many people protested about the results, then?

And, in perhaps my favourite of his comments, I refer you to his attack on Paul the psychic Octopus after the World Cup. Paul, apparently, spread “Western propaganda and superstition.”

"Those who believe in this type of thing cannot be the leaders of the global nations that aspire, like Iran, to human perfection, basing themselves in the love of all sacred values.”

Right.

I haven’t seen Mr Galloway’s film, but given that the former Respect MP has been vocal in his support for Ahmadinejad and tends to make clear his attitude towards Israel, I’d imagine the above points won’t make in into the final cut.

Which is a shame. Because I for one would like to see more of these “real” Ahmadinejadisms exposed for the odious and repellent nonsense that they truly are.
