Netanyahu sees long grass, kicks ball into it

The Israeli Prime Minister has set up a panel comprising 18 of his 30-odd ministers to look into the social crisis affecting Israel. 18 Ministers? That'll kill off any decision-making to alleviate the plight of the Israeli middle class.

And speaking of the demos, now it appears the far right has spotted a bandwagon on to which it needs to jump. Several fascist settlers and their supporters descended on Tel Aviv and elsewhere to chanting racist and homophobic abuse. They blamed the Sudanese migrant workers and the Arabs for the mess Israel is in in much the same way the EDL and BNP and other neo-Nazi groups blame immigrants for social problems in the UK.
But they were shouted down in Jaffo and Tel Aviv by thousands who gave them short shrift who told them that "Jews and Arabs refuse to be enemies".
The best chant so far is the mixed Arabic and Hebrew: "Al-Shaab yurid Tzedek Chevrati" (The People want Social Justice"). And the growing recognition that if the occupation of the West Bank and the settlement enterprise continues, there will be no social justice.
