It is not for the JC — or anyone else — to tell Jewish students what they should do about the election of Malia Bouattia as NUS president. They are the ones who bear the brunt of what happens on campus, and it is for them to decide how to react to this latest provocation.
But we do think it is appropriate and important to record the bravery and commitment of those students who refuse to be cowed.
Supposed anti-Zionist protests are, more often than not, confrontational and addressed directly at Jewish students, and are rarely other than antisemitic in both intent and execution. It would be easy to opt for a quiet life in the face of such targeting. Those who refuse that option and instead stand up for what is right deserve not just our support but our thanks — and our help. They are fighting for all of us.
