Whatever one thinks of the decision to strip Fred Goodwin of his knighthood, one thought will no doubt have gone through many minds when the news was announced: thank heavens he is not Jewish.

There is a marked propensity in much of the media to make pointed references to the Jewish names of figures caught up in financial or political scandals. One can only imagine the orgy of insinuation that we would now be enduring.
