Armchair Zionists real or otherwise

July 26, 2011 20:57

So a bunch of old codgers who are not privy to the latest security assessments having last served when the old king was on the throne are claiming that Israel does not need to retain the Jordan Valley since it has the capacity to occupy the Jordan Valley by force. So when the Eastern Front revives as the Palestinians have promised us it will, and Israel sees potential danger, Israel will just invade the Palestinian state and occupy the Jordan Valley.
Now let's step out of the land of fantasy for just one moment and into the land of reality. In 2009 Israel was obliged to enter Gaza from which it had fully disengaged in order to stop the terrorist rockets of which over 8000 had fallen on Sderot Ashkelon et al. What was the US EU and UN position in that case? Israel was called upon to exercise restraint was accused of every war crime under the sun, was pilloried by the foreign media and even some of its own and after having carried a limited operation was faced with the now repudiated Goldstone Inquisition which found it guilty as charged.
What pray will happen when Israel is forced to attack not a terrorist run enclave but a sovereign state which presumably will not have been slow in signing agreements with other Arab States and actors (e.g. Hezbollah) to come to its aid in the event of hostilities with Israel. In fact the likely scenario will be that Israel will either be forced to show restraint, and not escalate the situation by invading & occupying the "holy" demilitarized state of Palestine and consequently suffer enormous casualties or if Israel ignores the US EU UN etc., and does invade it will branded the aggressor by actually starting the war and face crippling sanctions or worse. But this is not these old geezers' problem. This will be the problem of the citizens of Israel at that time. It certainly will not be the problem of the armchair Zionists now calling for withdrawal at any cost - "to save the soul of Israel". Should this happen the armchair Zionists of course will just shake their heads muttering "it's all the zealots' fault" and go back to watching 'Eastenders' or whatever they do to pass the time of day.
