A number of United Synagogue congregations are pressing ahead with the introduction of the new role of women’s officer, which has been formally approved by the Chief Rabbi and US leaders.

Muswell Hill, Alei Tzion, South Hampstead, Golders Green and Bushey are among the first to develop the position within their communities.

The women’s officer is designed to be part of the local synagogue executive, sitting alongside chairman, vice-chairman, financial representative and wardens,

Muswell Hill, Alei Tzion and South Hampstead have had a prototype of the position in place for a while, encouraging the participation of women in religious services and community events. Golders Green has recently followed suit with several women acting in rotation. Bushey also has a number of women working together.

Yehudit Bauernfreund, who has been fulfilling the function at Alei Tzion in Hendon, said it had “provided a framework for the organisation of women’s-only services such as Kabbalat Shabbat and Megillah reading. It has enabled us to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for women who visit or join.”

Jo Grose, US director of communities and strategy, said it was “vital we ensure our shuls become even more inclusive and I am pleased that a number of our shuls have already introduced this position”.
