An interfaith walk for peace organised by Catford and Bromley United Synagogue attracted more than 400 participants.

Joe Burchell, chair of the south London congregation, said the original idea came after the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby in nearby Woolwich and the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris.

“It was felt that a sign of solidarity and friendship in partnership with all members of society was needed.”

The first walk had 100 participants “and it has grown from there”.

Walkers set off from the synagogue and the route also took in a church, an Islamic centre and a temple. A candle was lit at each as a symbol of unity.

“It is great way for the different faith communities to get to know each other,” Mr Burchell said. “It is also great for the kids.”

Cheder pupils Milly Burchell, eight, and Dov Paniri, seven, “read a passage from the Talmud about loving our fellow members of all communities”.

Lewisham Mayor Sir Steve Bullock was among the walkers.
