Celebrities, footballers and politicians have helped a south Wales family to raise thousands of pounds for a cancer charity.

The Cantor family wanted to give something back to the Velindre centre, which has helped treat 27-year-old Justine Cantor after she was diagnosed with melanoma.

It provides services for 1.5 million people and is one of the largest centres in Britain.

Justine's sister Natasha last week launched an online campaign to encourage family and friends to make donations. Their efforts received a significant boost when brother Elliott turned to Twitter to encourage further support. He asked dozens of actors, musicians and sporting stars to forward the link to the donation page to their fans - and golfer Nick Faldo, Conservative MP Louise Mensch, Cardiff City Football Club and American-Jewish wrestler Bill Goldberg were among those who did.

Inter Milan and Holland footballer Wesley Sneijder sent the message to his 185,000-plus followers, attracting donations from as far afield as Japan.

The campaign raised £2,000 in its first 24 hours and had reached more than £3,300 by Monday.

"Originally we planned to raise £1,000, but my friends said we would be able to collect more than that," Natasha said.

"We have had a great response.

"There is a Jewish concept that by giving to charity each person can help to give Justine the strength to fight this evil disease."

Elliott added that the response had "put a smile on Justine's face".
