Trump Chanukah tweet sparks flood of antisemitism

articlemain

Donald Trump wished supporters – and detractors – a happy Chanukah online.

As with most of his missives, the president-elect used his Twitter feed to mark the Jewish holiday. His message, which featured a picture of a fully lit chanukiah, included the words: “Wishing you a bright and happy hannukah! Donald & Melania Trump”.

But the goodwill message was met with considerable distaste from his far-right followers.

One swastika-toting follower tweeted “WTF?!” while another echoed the sentiment and added: “I hate trump now.”

Amongst the many more angry responses, another replied to Mr Trump’s tweet and said: “You better be f***ing kidding me! I voted for you and you said you were a ‘good christians’ and we dont support satanic jews.”

Refusing to be intimidated by the antisemitism, Mr Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, also took to social media to commemorate the festival of lights.

Ms Trump, who converted to Judaism, published a picture with her husband Jared Kushner and their children in which they are seen with four lit chanukiahs. She captioned her image: “This year is one of the rare and special occasions where Hanukkah and Christmas coincide. Merry Christmas & Happy Hanukkah! #happyholidays.”
