Although President Trump has performed more strongly than projected by polls, early indications are that he has not increased his Jewish support

Although Donald Trump has yet again defied the national polls and could still win an election that may take days to decide, traditional American support for the Democrats appears to be holding up.

According to an exit poll of early voters carried out for the anti-occupation Israel advocacy group, J-Street, 77 per cent of Jews said they had voted for Democrat contender Joe Biden with only 21 per cent hoping to return President Trump to the White House,  JTA reported.

This closely matches projections of 75 per cent support for Mr Biden and 22 per cent for Mr Trump by the American Jewish Committee last month.

A poll by the Pew Research Centre last month put Jewish support at 70 per cent for Mr Biden and 27 per cent for Mr Trump.

Four years ago, 71 per cent of American Jews backed Democratic candidate Hilary Clinton with 24 per cent opting for Mr Trump.

The results of a fuller poll are due to be released later today, according to JTA.

Mr Biden is currently leading Mr Trump by 238 electoral college votes to 213. The winner will need 270, with 77 votes still to be settled.
