A top doctor is leaving Canada as antisemitism surges with prime minister Mark Carney admitting that the country has ‘failed’ Jews.
Dr Emmanuel Moss, 45, is the chief of cardiac surgeon at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal.
He has handed in his resignation and plans to move to Atlanta, USA, blaming rising Jew-hate in the city and problems with the province’s health system, reports the Montreal Gazette.
Dr Moss is widely regarded as one of Canada’s leading cardiac surgeons and is an expert in robotic heart operations.
He and his family are said to be stunned by the rise in antisemitic incidents in Montreal with Jews being physically assaulted, Jewish-owned businesses vandalised, synagogues firebombed and bullets fired at a yeshiva.
It is reported that Dr Moss was particularly shocked by anti-Zionist protesters who recently staged a mock hanging with an effigy of a man wearing a kippah.
It is believed the effigy was meant to be Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.
The news about Dr Moss comes as Canada’s prime minister Mark Carney speaks out about rising tide of antisemitism gripping the country.
Giving a speech at a synagogue, he said: “The horror and shame are global. Our actions must be local. “They start with clearly admitting that Canada’s civic compact is failing Jewish Canadians.”
Carney said antisemitism has surged to levels not seen since World War II
He explained that last year more than two-thirds of all religiously-motivated hate crime was aimed at Jews, who make up just 1 per cent of the population.
The prime minister, speaking at Holly Blossom Temple, Toronto, said his government had brought in legislation to tackle antisemitism.
"It’s severe and it demands a targeted response and that is what our government is fully committed to,” he said.
Carney said at Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto.
