Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has vowed to build an alliance against Islamist radicalism at the next summit of European Union leaders this month, according to The Times. 

The country is reeling after Monday’s deadly shooting in Vienna when a jihadist gunman killed four people. 

“I expect an end to the misconceived tolerance and for all the nations of Europe to finally realise how dangerous the ideology of political Islam is for our freedom and the European way of life,” he told Die Welt, a German newspaper.  

In summer, the Austrian government launched an initiative to counter the influence of political influence of political Islam, which Minister of Integration Susanne Raab called a “dangerous ideology”. 

Last month French President Emmanuel Macron said that Islam was a religion “in crisis all over the world today” following a series of terrorist incidents in France. 

The comments drew an angry riposte from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said Mr Macron needed “mental treatment”.
