Labour MP: 'It's appalling Burgon and Butler haven't signed up to pledges to end antisemitism'

Wes Streeting criticises Labour deputy leadership hopefuls in LBC interview

Labour MP Wes Streeting has condemned Labour deputy leadership candidates Richard Burgon and Dawn Butler for not signing up to the Board of Deputies’ “Ten pledges to end the antisemitism crisis”.

Interviewed by Andrew Castle on LBC about the campaigns for Labour’s leadership and deputy leadership, the Ilford North MP said: "I'm afraid in the deputy race, both Richard Burgon and Dawn Butler – [the latter] ironically, the Shadow Equalities Secretary - haven't signed those pledges and I think that's just absolutely appalling.

"It should just rule them out of the race altogether as it says we know best and we're still not listening."

Mr Streeting had earlier declared: "This is not just an issue of votes; this is an issue of morality and principles and showing that we are genuinely an anti-racist party."

He said it was a positive sign that leadership candidate Rebecca Long-Bailey had signed up to the Board of Deputies pledges:  ‘It says ‘look, I'm listening’.”

"But she's been a member of the National Executive Committee and as a member of the NEC, she didn't support the IHRA definition of antisemitism which is supported by the vast majority of the Jewish community and is internationally supported. So she's got some explaining to do there."

Board president Marie van der Zyl said last week that it “beggars belief” that Mr Burgon and Ms Butler had not endorsed the pledges.
