A fifth Jewish site in Golders Green has been attacked in what community leaders are calling a “deliberate and targeted campaign of antisemitic hate”, leaving multiple buildings covered in faeces.
The incident, involving a synagogue, is understood to have occurred last week, but was only connected to the spate of attacks following a reassessment of CCTV footage outside the shul.
It was reported hours after a Jewish school was targeted with a bucket of urine in the early hours of this morning, and two days after a synagogue was desecrated with excrement. It is believed to be the fifth such incident in the area, which has seen faeces plastered on four Jewish buildings, and urine thrown on another.
CCTV footage reviewed by Shomrim North West London appears to link the same suspect to all of the incidents, prompting urgent calls for an arrest.
A spokesperson for Shomrim said: “With five confirmed attacks in just over a week, it is clear that this is a deliberate and targeted campaign of antisemitic hate.
“Synagogues, a school, and even a passageway used by worshipers have now all been defiled. Our community will not be intimidated, and Shomrim is working hand in hand with the police to ensure this individual is caught and brought to justice.”
He added: “Awareness has been raised, which made people check if they have had something like this happen and look at the CCTV. This is evidence that there is a huge spate across the community.”
Referring to the attack on a school on Monday, a spokesperson for the charity said: “While there may have been a visible police presence this morning, the school has taken the necessary precautions to ensure there is no threat to children.”
MP for Finchley and Golders Green Sarah Sackman said: “There is no place for antisemitism and hate in our community. I will not tolerate it. I visited one of the synagogues that has experienced a vile attack to offer my solidarity and reassurance to them.
“The wider community in Golders Green should be assured that the police, Shomrim and local authorities are doing everything possible to find the perpetrator and bring them to justice.
“The vast majority of people in Golders Green live side by side with mutual respect. We will not let hatred win.”
The Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) said the first incident was “utterly disgusting in more ways than one. Imagine being Jewish and going to attend morning prayers, only to find out that your place of worship has been desecrated in this way.
"Those responsible for this revolting act must be held to account and. made to face serious consequences.”
No arrests had been made as of yesterday, but Detective Superintendent Tony Bellis, leading the investigation, said his team was “working at pace” to identify the suspect.
Bellis said: “This is a revolting and appalling act, and we are urging the public to help us locate those responsible as soon as possible. We are very aware of how distressing this must have been for those who use the synagogues.
“We will not tolerate this kind of behaviour. We are actively engaging with the local community and remain in discussion with community partners and key stakeholders to provide reassurance and support.”
