Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband will join talks on the Strait of Hormuz and the situation in Saudi Arabia, hosted in Turkey on Friday.
It comes as traffic through the key shipping lane remains down on levels before the start of the Iran War and amid the recent surge in fighting between Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis and Saudi Arabia.
The UK said this week it would extend its military support for the Saudis, providing British fighter jets to shoot down Houthi drones and missiles fired into the kingdom.
The meeting brings together the European E4 grouping of UK, France, Germany and Italy with the so-called R4 countries of Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
The foreign secretary will use the talks to point to Iranian tactics in the strait being replicated, including through Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and pressure on the maritime choke points of Bab el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal.
He will tell his counterparts that the Iranian regime and its proxies cannot be allowed to further destabilise the region and global markets.
Miliband will also advocate for a diplomatic solution to the Iran conflict that restores full navigational rights and freedoms through the crucial strait.
Attacks on ships transiting the channel have risen since US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest proposal to end the war and fully reopen the waterway.
The conditions Iran is proposing, which include ending the US blockade of Iranian ports, echo those in a deal that fell apart within days of Washington and Tehran signing it in June.
