An Israeli Strictly Orthodox woman has given birth to her tenth child just hours after becoming a grandmother for the first time.

Elisheva Baumel was brought to the Hadassah Har Hatzofim hospital near Jerusalem to have her baby - and the little boy immediately became an uncle to his nephew Yosef, who was born the day before.

“This was a particularly unique experience that not many people get to have,” said Aharon Shmuel Baumel, who became both father and grandfather in the space of 24 hours.

Yeshiva World reported Ms Baumel as saying they “still haven’t quite digested the whole scenario. Just yesterday I was holding both new wonderful babies and I became overwhelmed with joy.”

The family lives in Givat Ze'ev, a West Bank settlement north of Jerusalem.

“We are always happy when something like this happens and shows us just how special the religious and Charedi community is,” said Professor Simcha Yagel, director of the Maternity Ward of the hospital.

“Generally, the grandmother helps her daughter-in-law to raise the grandchildren.

“Only a few merit that the grandmother and daughter-in-law should raise their children together.”
