UEFA has reversed its decision to block the Israeli state broadcaster from airing international football matches to settlements in the West Bank.

Previously, the European football governing body had restricted access to its matches, including preliminary rounds of the Euro 2020 championships, to Israelis living within the Green Line.

Some of those games feature the Israeli national team, which falls under UEFA's auspices.

This week the Kan public broadcaster announced that UEFA had reversed its decision, and that it had purchased the rights to broadcast to Israeli settlements, the Jerusalem Post reported.

beIN Sports, based in Qatar, reportedly won the rights to broadcast the games to Palestinian conurbations, with Arabic commentary.

Earlier this month, Kan had attempted to force UEFA’s hand, saying that it would choose not to broadcast the games at all if it could not show them in the settlements.

The public broadcaster said: “Kan works to ensure quality and equal public broadcasting on the radio, television and digital to all Israeli citizens, in all locations, regardless of their area of residence,” the public broadcaster said on Tuesday.

“We’re happy to purchase the rights to air the Israel national team’s qualifying games in the Euro and the World Cup and to bring an open and free broadcast to all citizens of Israel.”
