Harrow and Wembley Progressive Synagogue wants to enter into a shared usage agreement with another faith group, and later sell its 7,000 sq ft premises.
Alan Solomon, the shul’s immediate past chairman, said the 450-member community has decided to “explore the possibility of entering into an arrangement with another faith group for shared usage with a view to an eventual sale sometime in the future”.
The Preston Road property, which is being advertised in Harrow by estate agents Baker Pearce, is valued at £2.5 million and includes half-an-acre of land.
An agent for the company said he had been “inundated” with offers to share the building, which was re-built after being demolished six years ago.
Rabbi Danny Rich, Liberal Judaism chief executive, said that the 60-year-old Harrow community was an example of “old established synagogues in an area where the Jewish population is diminishing”. He added that it had taken the “responsible decision that it can best serve its needs by sharing its building with other communities”.
