The Mayor of London has wished the Jewish community “Chanukah Sameach” and celebrated its response to the pandemic ahead of the first night of the festival this evening.
Speaking in front of the giant menorah which is back in place in Trafalgar Square, Sadiq Khan said: “I want to send my greetings to the Jewish community in London and worldwide celebrating Chanukah.
“The celebration of this Festival of Lights comes from when the Maccabees overcame tyranny and restored religious freedom.
“Their triumph thousands of years ago is as inspiring as it is relevant to all of us now.
“As we continue to rebuild our city from the pandemic, we look where we can for examples of strength and resolve.
“And I want to thank the many Jewish key workers, synagogues and community organisations who have done so much for our city, working day and night responding to the pandemic.
“These acts of selflessness and kindness are another example of why London will always be the greatest city in the world.
“From my family to yours I wish you a happy Chanukah. Chanukah Sameach!”
A candle will be lit each day in Trafalgar Square throughout the festival until the final evening on Monday 6 December.
