For most Ashkenazim (myself included) there is no new year without this cornerstone of cakes. For a traditional take, my rich moist recipe (pictured above) is a winner. Based on my Grandma's perfect bake, this one will have everyone asking for your recipe.

Bring your celebrations bang up to date with this salted honey tart from Black Cow chef, Shiri Kraus. This creamy, honey-scented custard-filled tart is the perfect tea treat over the Yom Tovim.

For a lighter honey bake that really tastes of the golden nectar, this year's honeyed apple cake that I developed for M&S will be just the ticket. It's also super quick to make and made moist by the gorgeous grated apples.

Top chicken traybakes:

Keep things simple with one pan wonders like this delicious dish of chicken and plums from Sarit Packer and Itamar Srulovich of Honey & Co. It is the work of minutes and utterly delicious. An annual treat on my Rosh Hashanah table.

Equally quick to prepare but bringing in the sweet sour flavours of pomegranate molasses and the jewel-like beauty of the juicy pink arils, is this tray-baked chicken with pomegranates and walnuts from Anne Shooter's fabulous Cherish cookbook.

Another new winner on the JC site is Sarah Mann-Yeager's honey garlic roasted chicken with sweet miso glazed carrots. Finger licking good. And bound to be a huge success.

Vegan and veggie saviours:

More and more of us need a vegetarian or vegan main. No stress, we've got plenty on the JC's website.

Fabienne Viner-Luzzato's harissa-spiced salmon fish balls with two tasty tahina dips gives an old favourite a Middle Eastern vibe.

A pomegranate-packed salsa adds cooling notes to this spicy, griddled tuna, which is perfect for smaller gatherings.

This honey and harissa topped salmon is quick and easy to prepare and will be the showtopping star of your buffet table.

Awesome apple desserts:

It's all about the apples at this time of year. Not only are they a seasonal treat, but also essential for our celebrations. These fruit-filled bakes will totally fit the bill.

This super simple grated apple tart has a treacle tart vibe. Use a ready-to-bake base and it's the work of minutes.

For a more traditional cake smothered in toffee sauce that's perfectly parev, you're going to need Denise Phillips's sticky apple cake. It ticks every indulgent pudding box.

Gorgeously comforting and ever so easy on the eye, this apple skillet cake from Lisa Roukin will be a showstopper on your festive table.
