Menorah Foundation School in Edgware has opened a new kitchen for children where they can learn cooking skills as part of a curriculum on food and nutrition.
From chopping to measuring, activities have quickly made the class in the kitchen a favourite with children.
Katie Fox, the teacher leading the initiative, said, “We’ve seen so much enthusiasm. Children are learning not just how to cook, but how to work together, follow instructions and understand the nutritional impact food has on their daily lives.
“And when it’s time to mark the chagim, there’s nothing more joyful than seeing pupils take pride in preparing something special.”
Other developments at the school include a revamped computer room where pupils can explore coding, online safety and digital communication; and the introduction of “Cool time” – “Choose our own learning” - where children can access a number of independent educational opportunities through the day, with teacher guidance.
It is an approach widely used in early years settings but Menorah Foundation says it is one of the few primaries that have brought it into key stage one.
Headteacher Holli Hunter said, “Our year 1 and year 2 pupils are thriving. They’re more engaged, more curious and more willing to take ownership of their learning.
"This isn’t just theory, we see the impact every day in how our children approach tasks, collaborate with their peers and talk about what they’re learning.”
