Snow wipes out Scottish events

School closed, Purim celebrations cancelled and key community day postponed

Heavy snow in Glasgow has seriously impacted on Jewish life.

Calderwood Lodge Primary – Scotland’s only Jewish school – has been closed for three days and Newton Mearns Synagogue cancelled its Purim party, although the Megillah reading went ahead.

It was announced this morning that a major communal event planned for Sunday, the Jewish Arts Family Book Day, is also off, although it will be rescheduled.

Glasgow Jewish Representative Council co-president Evy Yedd said Calderwood pupils “had huge plans for Purim and were very upset when the celebration could not take place.

“We know of one family coming up by train for Purim who got as far as Carlisle and were turned back.

“The book day had to be called off as speakers were coming from throughout the UK and we were not sure if they would be able to get here.”

However, shul minyanim are being maintained because regulars live close to their synagogues. Community members are checking on the elderly and isolated.
