Homemaker Roisy Nevis has volunteered for Kisharon Day School since 1996. The North London-based school provides education for children aged from five to 16 who have learning disabilities
Why Kisharon?
I always loved music-related activities, and although I had no formal training I wanted to work with special needs children in this field. A friend told me that Kisharon needed more volunteers for its music and movement class and so began a long and mutually beneficial arrangement for the students and myself.
What does your volunteering involve?
Along with four other volunteers, I organise a 45-minute class. We try to use songs which involve co-ordination and movement.
What do you most enjoy about being a volunteer?
Seeing the children learn and improve. I also love the camaraderie between the volunteers.
What is your most memorable volunteering moment?
During a class, one child, who had not uttered a word for many months, casually took the microphone and sang a solo.
