Pollacks boosts Maccabiah football squad

Team GB Open football manager David Pollack has added two players to his squad that will compete at the 19th Maccabiah Games in Israel in July.

Goalkeeper Tomer Sherman played for Hapoel Haifa during their Liga Leumit Championship-winning season of 2008-2009.

Jake Furman, the younger brother of Doncaster Rovers player Dean Furman, comes into the side from a football scholarship in Miami. He has previous experience at a Maccabiah Games having been selected for the under-18 squad in 2009.

Pollock said: "I've been an admirer of Jake for a long time. We wanted to take him to previous International Games but, due to his University scholarship commitments, he was unable to link up with us.

"However, now we have him in the squad I feel he has a lot to offer and he’ll be a great outlet for Maccabi GB.

"With Tomer, he has played at a very high standard and will bring a lot of experience to the squad and, specifically, to help young Declan Green, the other keeper in the squad."

With just over three months until the start of the Games, Pollack believes his squad is shaping up well. He said: "We have had a number of sessions together, including some team-bonding trips to local, Jewish charities – including visits to Maccabi GB, CST, Jewish Care and Norwood.

"There has also been a lot of success with the ‘Money Can’t Buy’ Open Football Raffle, drawn last month, with over £29,000 raised, which will greatly contribute to Maccabi GB’s athletes competing in Israel this summer."
