This is to whoever wrote James Murdoch's speech today at the Edinburgh TV Festival (maybe the man himself?):
I worship you.
I can barely remember the last time I read a speech which was so certain to offend the audience to which it was being given and with which I so wholly, utterly and completely agreed. The last sentence is simply awesome - a line I wish I had come up with myself and will quote, I am sure, many times:
The only reliable, durable, and perpetual guarantor of independence is profit.
Please, please read the whole thing. It's far more subtle and thoughtful than I've really given it credit for above, and needs to be read by anyone with an interest in democracy, journalism and - critically - the future of the BBC.
