Much of the world was taken by surprise over the weekend when the US announced it had "captured" Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and intended to put him on trial in New York.

President Trump confirmed on Saturday that the US will "run" Venezuela for the time being and bring in its own oil companies to tap the country's vast reserves.

The operation prompted plenty of debate about the legality of effectively abducting a sitting head of state, even one who is widely believed to have rigged the last set of elections to retain power.

But it was met with warm praise from Israel.
