West Bank settlers clash with Israeli soldiers

articlemain

Israeli security forces have demolished several illegal buildings in the West Bank settlement of Yitzhar, despite resistance from its hard-line Jewish residents.

Six border police officers were injured as hundreds of settlers threw rocks at the demolition workers.

According to an Israel Radio report security forces took down a number of buildings in the early stages of construction, along with two mobile homes.

In a statement the army said hundreds of settlers retaliated by throwing rocks, setting tyres on fire, blocking roads and damaging police vehicles. A nearby IDF post was also attacked.

The army said it responded to the resistance with crowd dispersion measures.

A Yitzhar spokesperson said troops fired tear gas and several of the protesters needed medical attention.

The Yitzhar settlement is home to 200 families and its residents are known for frequent clashes with local Palestinians and Israeli forces.
