The victim filmed the attack on his mobile phone
April 18, 2018 14:45A young Jewish man has been attacked in Berlin in what is thought to be an antisemitic attack.
According to German media reports the attack took place on Tuesday and the victim, 21, was an Israeli and wearing a kippah. He used his mobile phone to video the attack by a man who repeatedly calls him "Jew" in Arabic while hitting him with his belt.
The attack took place in Prenzlauer Berg, a Jewish area of Berlin popular among Israelis living in Berlin. It is also home to an Orthodox Jewish community centred around the Lauder Yeshivas Beis Zion and the synagogue Kahal Adass Jisroel Berlin.
Passers-by called the police, who say they are investigating the attack.
The video has been shared widely on social media after Berlin-based Jewish Forum for Democracy and Against Antisemitism posted it on their Facebook page.
The spokesman for the Forum said the incident was "incomprehensible". Levi Salomon told the BZ online that "Jews are not safe.”
"It is incomprehensible to see a young Jewish man attacked on the street in an established area of Berlin, just because he is identified as a Jew.
"It shows Jews are not safe even here. We don't need any more speeches, we need actions."
Berlin Jewish community council member Mike Samuel Delberg also shared the video on his Facebook profile, and in his posting urged the police and investigators to find the perpetrator and “go after him with the full force of law.”
