Trump set to cut funds in blow to Palestinian Authority

The new President plans to reduce financial backing for international organisations offering the PA full membership

articlemain

President Donald Trump is planning to cut funding to organisations that offer full membership to the Palestinian Authority, the New York Times has reported.

If he goes ahead, it could significantly reduce American financial backing for United Nations agencies such as Unesco.

The newspaper said it had obtained a copy of a draft order which proposed ending funding for any organisation “controlled or substantially influenced by any state that sponsors terrorism” or was involved in persecuting marginalised groups or violating human rights.

The order would also cover organisations that give full membership to the PA or PLO or which circumvent sanctions against Iran or North Korea.

Mr Trump’s administration is also freezing a $221 million parting gift to the PA from President Barack Obama shortly before he left office, according to a Palestinian source reported by the Times of Israel.
