The three suspects are then said to have stolen the couple's phones, before fleeing.
Following the alleged attack, the pair ran to safety at the nearby Gam Gam kosher restaurant, where they had eaten earlier in the evening.
Sion Yehiel Banin Rahamim, a Chabad member and the owner of the restaurant, told the Italian outlet Il Gazzettino: “It matters little whether the victims are from Chabad or not.
"It’s unfortunate that such serious attacks happen in our city, which I have always considered, and still consider, tolerant and intelligent. The attack was in no way provoked, and passersby acted as if nothing had happened.”
According to the newspaper, the couple declined to report the attack to police and flew back to the US shortly after. It was later reported to authorities by members of the city’s Jewish community.
Italian police are now investigating and have been contacted by the JC for comment.
