Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, will warn Orthodox Jewish leaders at a meeting later today that he is ready to close places of worship if the surge in coronavirus cases continues.
Schools are due to shut today in nine of the worst hotspots in New York City, including neighbourhoods in Brooklyn and Queens, which are home to a large Jewish population.
“We know religious institutions have been a problem,” Mr Cuomo said at a press conference yesterday.
Mr Cuomo said leaders would be told, “If you do not agree to enforce the rules, then we’ll close the institutions down. I am prepared to do that.”
