We were promised some exciting new changes when former Marvel wizz kid James Gunn made the jump to DC studios as their new head honcho and now he seems to have delivered.

After months of auditions, speculation, and endless screen tests, we finally have a new Superman, and for the first time, he's Jewish.

The 29-year-old David Corenswet will star in Superman: Legacy as Clark Kent alongside Marvellous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan who will feature as Lois Lane in what promises to be an exciting new reboot of the decades-old franchise.

Raised in Philadelphia, Corenswet graduated from prestigious art college Julliard in 2016 and has since starred in a number of TV shows such as House of Cards and Netflix’s The Politician.

David also starred alongside Jewish actor Mia Goth in the A24 indie horror Pearl from director Ti West.

David’s father John Corenswet, a former theatre actor in New York City who retrained as lawyer, was from a prominent Jewish family in New Orleans. David’s grandfather Sam was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. His great-grandfather was a Jewish immigrant from Russia and has German Jewish ancestry.

Corenswet's co-star Rachel Brosnahan, while not Jewish herself, has played the eponymous Mrs. Maisel in the hit Hulu show for five seasons, amid accusations of 'Jewface.'

The original Superman comic book was written and illustrated by the New York Jewish duo Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster are also Jewish. 

Written in 1938, when the pair were teenagers - Man of Steel borrowed heavily from Jewish legend. According to a 2021 book "Is Superman Circumcised?" Siegel and Shuster "based their hero's origin story on Moses, his strength on Samson, his mission on the golem, and his nebbish secret identity on themselves. They made him a refugee fleeing catastrophe on the eve of World War II and sent him to tear Nazi tanks apart nearly two years before the US joined the war."
