Netflix has commissioned a series which will combine CGI and live action to tell the story of a US army unit that liberated Dachau Concentration Camp at the end of the Second World War.

The Liberator, a four part series, will follow the 157th Infantry Regiment, a national guard unit from Oklahoma, through its fight to liberate Europe, from Italy in 1943 to France and Germany in 1944 and 1945.

In April 1945, the unit helped liberate over 30,000 prisoners from Dachau, the oldest Nazi concentration camp, near Munich. Tens of thousands of prisoners, including many Jews, died at the camp during its twelve years of operation.   

The series, is based on the book The Liberator: One World War II Soldier’s 500-Day Odyssey by historian Alex Kershaw, which tells on the wartime experiences of Felix Sparks, the commander of the regiment.

Starting as a Lieutenant, he steadily moved through the ranks as the war progressed, becoming a colonel before subsequently being promoted to Brigadier General.

A release date for the series has not yet been announced.
