More Bauer magazines found glorifying Nazis

articlemain

More evidence has emerged over the publication by Bauer Media Group of magazines that glorify the Nazis.

Last week the JC reported the concern of Holocaust groups and antisemitism watchdogs over Bauer’s continued defence of Der Landser, a German magazine that honours the SS.

Bauer is now one of the largest UK media companies and is increasing its presence in the British media market. Its stable ranges from Heat magazine to Kiss and Magic radio.

It has now emerged that the group publishes two other similar German magazines. Both Geschichte & Wissen, which talks of the “momentous” history of the Third Reich, and Militaer & Geschichte, which glorifies Nazi troops, have been attacked by communal organisations.

In a letter to the German government in February, Abraham Foxman, director of the US Anti-Defamation League, aired his concerns about all three publications, which have commemorated Adolf Hitler, his deputy Hermann Göring and propagandist Leni Riefenstahl,

He asked why the publishers were not prosecuted under the national law against the propagation of Nazism.

Mr Foxman said: “The Bauer Media Group’s publications may be within the letter of German law, but they may also be seen as legitimising the Nazi regime.”

In response, German government representatives said they would monitor the impact of the publications while also safeguarding freedom of the press and free speech.

But Mr Foxman responded: “Any glorification of the Nazi regime is simply unacceptable. We welcome the commitment of the German government to maintain a vigilant eye on these publications and to take action if they cross the line.”
