A 37-year-old American man has been charged with attempting to steal part of a railway track leading into Auschwitz.
Polish police said the unnamed man was charged with the attempted theft of an item of cultural importance in the southern town of Oswiecim, which is close to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp.
A spokesman for the museum said security staff alerted police after they became aware that the suspect was trying to remove one of the metal rails leading into the complex.
Police spokeswoman Malgorzata Jurecka told AP the man had “admitted his guilt but has been released as he awaits further steps”.
