Jewish singers Haim tipped as Sound of 2013

A trio of Jewish singers from Los Angeles is being tipped to dominate the 2013 music industry.

Sisters Danielle, Este and Alana, who together make up the soft rock group Haim – the band is named after their surname – topped the BBC's annual "Sound of" poll this week. Past winners of the award have included Jessie J and Adele.

"So excited/honoured to have won," the sisters tweeted after the announcement. "We kinda can't believe it."

The Haim sisters, whose father Mordechai is Israeli, are aged between 21 and 26 but have been making music for more than a decade. Their first taste of the spotlight was in a family band called "Rockinhaim", singing covers with their father and their mother, Donna. For their first ever show as a family they played at a Jewish deli in Hollywood and were paid in matzah ball soup.

In an interview with Shalom Life last year, the Haim sisters revealed that at one point they considered calling their band "The Bagel Bitches".

Although the sisters have played in separate bands in the past, they said it was not the same. "It was never as fun as when all three of us got together and played. Music is just way more fun when we play together."

Haim's songs include Forever and Don't Save Me and they have already played at shows with Mumford & Sons and opened for Florence and the Machine.
