Israelis preparing for the start of Passover this evening have been subjected to one of the largest air attacks by Iran since the outset of the war.
The repeated salvoes launched by the Islamic Republic in the hours before Pesach were targeted at civilian areas across the country.
Residents have gone back and forth to their shelters throughout the course of the day as alerts have sounded, followed by the all-clear.
Ten missiles are believed to have been fired at central Israel within a short space of time.
Missile fragments are said to have fallen in open areas after air defences responded.
The escalation appears to be timed to coincide with Pesach.
Emergency response teams arrived at sites in Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, Bnei Brak and Savion shortly after impacts were observed.
No injuries have been reported.
It came after a warning by the IDF earlier on Wednesday that the Islamic Republic may be ramping up its air campaign against Israel to coincide with the festival.
IDF Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Effie Defrin said: “Our defence systems are deployed and prepared to intercept threats across the country,” adding that all Israelis should respond to the instructions of Home Front Command.
On the first day of the war just over a month ago, almost a hundred missiles were launched by Iran at Israel.
But the level of air attack by Iran in the past few hours is a large step up from recent days, when each barrage was limited to two or three missiles, totalling around 15 a day.
In Iran, Israeli forces have continued to target military installations across the country today. They reportedly include an IRGC missile site in Isfahan.
An IDF Spokesperson said: “The IDF has begun a wide wave of attacks in the heart of Tehran.
“The Air Force has recently begun a wide wave of attacks against dozens of infrastructures of the Iranian terror regime in the heart of Tehran.
“Simultaneously, the Air Force is working to intercept threats from all fronts.”
