A former Israeli tennis star has been killed while cycling in New York.

Dan Hanegby, 36, is the first person to have died while riding a Citi Bike – the Big Apple’s equivalent of London’s Boris bikes.

Mr Hanegby, who moved to America to further his tennis career after serving as a staff sergeant in the IDF, was hit by a bus on Monday morning. A police source told the New York Times that he had swerved around a parked van and then struck the bus, before falling under its back wheel.

The married father-of-two, who worked as an investment banker, had been Israel’s top player until he began his compulsory national service. He was later ranked as the 66th top player in the USA.
