Israel’s isolation at the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) is about to come to an end as it joins the Western group of nations (WEOG) at the commission.

Israel has officially been invited to join the group as part of the deal in which it agreed to end its unofficial boycott of the UNHRC last month.

For over a year, Israel refused to take part in UNHRC proceedings in protest at the commission’s bias against the Jewish state. As part of the agreement, Israel will be a member of WEOG, which will make it more difficult for countries to single it out for condemnation and means that Israeli motions are far more likely to find backing.

The WEOG members have also committed not to participate in debates taking place under UNHRC Article 7, which mandates that, at every annual assembly, a separate meeting must be held regarding Israel and the situation in the West Bank. Israel is the only country with such an article.
